Pain-Seeking and Bliss-Seeking Patterns of Behaviour

Life-negating=Pain-seeking

Life-negating memes direct our focus and result in an attitude that favours death as the most likely outcome of a situation.

Life-affirming=Bliss-seeking

Life-affirming memes direct our focus and result in an attitude that favours life as the most likely outcome.

Self/Other

Self includes memetic/physical objects we experience as I. It is what individual entities identify as I.

Other includes memetic/physical objects we experience as Not I. Other is what individual entities identify as Not I.

Love/Hate

Love, from the human POV, is the experience of information. Love is experiencing all stimuli as life-affirming. Love encompasses and accepts all experiences and information. Love is favoring Self-interest over self-interest. It is experiencing existence in such a way that brings benefit to self and as many “Others” as possible. Love is creative in that it combines disparate POVs into a single POV. Memes which induce such attitudes in humans are called life-affirming memes.

Love is the positive inflection of Hate, from the life-affirming POV.

Hate, from the human POV, is the experience of a lack of information. Hate is ignorance of memetic and physical stimuli. Hate denies, ignores, or neglects “Other” stimuli in favor of “Self” stimuli. Hate is favoring self-interest over Self-interest. It is a pattern of behavior which benefits the individual with little to no regard for “Other” points of view. Memes which induce such attitudes in humans are called life-negating memes. Hate creates cognitive dissonance which results in physical and emotional pain.

From the POV of life-affirming memes, hate is the negative inflection of Love.

Time/Space=Space/Time

Time is a self-constraining illusion, and so is Truth. Time is an emotional energy. Truth is an emotional energy.

Time is an illusion and so is Truth. At least in the universal sense. Both Time and Truth are subjective experiences. The subjective experiences of Time and Truth can be experienced either collectively or individually. It’s up to the individual human being to decide which is a collective Truth and which is an individual Truth. It’s up to the individual what they do with their Time, whether to keep it to themselves or share it with others.

When/where subjective Truth and collective Truth match up, the individual is in harmony with the collective and the collective is in harmony with the individual. When/where subjective Truth contradicts Collective Truth, the individual is separated from the collective and vice versa. The degree to which individual and collective Time and Truth harmonize dictates the level of acceptance the two entities have for one another.

Culture and enjoying a social life calibrate individuals to the dominate truths they encounter. The individual’s emotions of truth will resonate with those of the dominant culture to lesser or greater degrees. The degree to which a culture influences the truth energies (the subjective experiences of emotions that feel like Truth) depends on the amount of time one shares with that culture.

It comes down to focus. Whatever the individual spends time focusing on (time and intensity of focus being the key factors), the more that individual will accept those objects of focus as Truth.

Cultures are human branes and include all social spheres the individual spends/shares time with. Cultures are discrete entities and power structures. They are memetic environments that bleed over into the individual’s physical environment.

Introduction to Memetic Translation

Once we know how to build a physical object, the names we give the parts that make the structure up become irrelevant. We know what parts we need and how to put them together. This goes here. That attaches to this. Saw saw bang band and voilà, here’s the finished product ready for use.

We see with our eyes and we remember from experience how to build the object. In order to build another object, we gather the appropriate materials, arrange those materials in the proper pattern or structure, and it’s built. We build the object according to a mental blueprint. An archetype, if you will. We remember the structure and build the object based on past experience. We understand the relationship each part has to the whole. Without this understanding it would be impossible to build the thing. We translate our past experience and our memory of the object’s structure (the relationships between the parts that constitute the whole) into a physical object.

For example, say we have a lot of books and we need somewhere to put them. We remember bookcases and shelves exist. We reflect on their structure. A bookcase consists of shelves enclosed on at least two sides. The structure of a bookcase consists of rectangular prisms (3D rectangles) affixed to one another in a certain way. These are our memories of bookcase structure.

We then translate those memories into the physical world. We physically gather the materials. Maybe we use plastic rectangular prisms. Maybe we use wood. Maybe we use granite. It doesn’t matter what material the rectangular prisms are made up so long as they are arranged according to the mental blueprint we have that defines the bookcase. Let’s say we use wood because it’s readily available and is the best material for our purposes.

We then take our rectangular prisms made of wood and fasten them together. We take nails or glue or staples (it doesn’t matter which for the purposes of this example), and we affix the individual pieces of wood to each other in a certain pattern with two pieces of wood parallel to one another and standing vertically and two pieces of wood horizontal to one another.

And now we have a bookcase. The meme “bookcase” is now a physical bookcase. The physical object is still defined by it’s meme because we now use the bookcase to store books. We don’t use it to sit on. The memetic translation is complete.

Memetic Analysis of a Bookcase

According to memetic theory, there are two kinds of memes. There are structural memes and masking memes. The structural meme of a bookcase is “rectangular prisms arranged parallel to on another, some horizontally and others vertically”. The masking memes of our bookcase are “wood and nails.” The wood and nails are masking memes because switching them for chiselled granite or plastic and glue does not change the relationships between the shapes. Nor does it change the function of the material. A plastic or granite bookcase would work just as well as our wooden one. Wood, plastic, granite, nails, and glue are the bookcases masking memes.

Narrative and Art as the Bookcase

Likewise with narratives, especially mythological narratives. In order to construct a narrative, to tell a story, you don’t have to know the names of the characters to enjoy the story. Those details are less important (unless you’re reading Dickens) because they don’t affect characterization in a way that affects the story’s structure.

In order to write a good story, you don’t have to know the names or definitions of terms like exposition, rising action, falling action, climax, epiphany, dénouement, pathetic fallacy, etc. You just have to see the parts and how they relate to one another. The trick is to separate the structural details, the memes that give the narrative its shape and meaning (the narrative’s structural and familial memes), from the superficial details (masking memes). This can be accomplished through memetic diagramming and memetic translation.

Memes are discrete units of meaning. They are quanta of meaning in other words. Memes can be both the skeleton of a story and its skin. The skin is decoration and different skins can be applied to the narrative’s skeleton. The bones of the skeleton are structural memes and can be categorized according to charge and spin like DNA. Structural memes can be grouped into families. Masking memes are the skin, what the story looks like. The skin is not as important as the skeleton, because without structure a narrative is just a heap of skin. Structural memes appeal to the intellect. Masking memes appeal to the senses and emotions.

Memetic translation is a way of retelling a story while avoiding plagiarism. It’s a way to update or otherwise alter a myth while preserving the myth’s meaning. Once you’ve memetically diagrammed enough myths, you can mix and match the parts and change the superficial details in order to create a brand new myth with a brand new meaning. The relationships between the parts are preserved to varying degrees and different materials can be used because the shape has been preserved. Just as a wooden bookcase can be translated into a metal one, so too can narratives.

Myths are best to memetically diagram and translate because they contain less consciousness. The characters of myth are usually archetypes and are generally flat as compared to characters in modern novels and films. This is because mythological narratives are simultaneously pedagogical and entertaining.

The bones of the skeleton are structural memes and can be categorized according to charge and spin. Structural memes appeal to the intellect. They relate the details to one another and can be grouped into families.

From the human point of view, existence equals energy which equals mass multiplied by the speed of light squared. For the storyteller, E=everything.

A piñata is an object which consists of a wire skeleton and a skin. A narrative is an object that consists of a structural memes and masking memes. If one compares narratives to piñatas, then structural memes are the skeleton and masking memes are the skin. The skin is decoration and can be changed out. A piñata of a dog is still a piñata of a dog whether its skin is purple papier-mâché or green balsa wood. So too, can the masking memes of a narrative be changed and its shape preserved through its structural memes.

The skin of a narrative consists of masking memes. They are the narrative’s sensory and emotional details. Masking memes are less influential on a narrative meaning than structural memes. The skin of a narrative is not as important as its skeleton because without a structure a narrative is just a heap of unrelated details.

The masking memes of narrative are the sensory, emotional, and intellectual content of that narrative.

Notes on Memetic Translation

First identify the pattern, then arrange the formulas accordingly. Write using pairs of opposites (pairs of opposites define the situation’s constraints).

It’s easier to slightly alter the definition of an existing word than to come up with a neologism. It takes less energy. When choosing words, choose from whatever language has a meme or metaphor closest to what you’re trying to describe and alter it as need be. Even dead languages add an air (create a mood) of authenticity and history to a modified meme.

A Geometry of Memes

Memes are thoughtforms. Metaphors. Energetic quanta. Memetic energy.

Memes are the energy of information and subjective Truth.

Memes are collections of emotional and sensory associations, like molecules.

A meme’s emotional gravity and spin of opinion (overall meaning, holistic meaning) are determined contextually by aggregations of associated emotional and sensory stimuli and their associations with memory.

The meaning of a given meme relies upon its context and the contexts of the memes associated with it (surrounding it), to lesser and greater degrees, depending.

Meanings overlap and associate with on another. A “meme” is a techinical term for a meaning/entity/memetic object which relies on context for its existence.

Where the associations between two or more memes overlap, one finds memetic synonyms and antonyms. This can be conceptualized if we imagine a Venn Diagram with a word at the center of one circle and another word in the center of another circle.

The proximity of the centers of the circles are will determine whether they are memetic synonyms or antonyms. If the circles overlap or touch they are memetic synonyms. If they don’t touch (and if they do under certain conditions) they are memetic antonyms.

Memetic information falls on a spectrum of meaning which depends on point of view (perspective).

A given point of view is constrained by memes, meanings, which contextualize it. Without these memes the point of view would not, indeed, could not, exist. The contextualizing and constraining memes/meanings are structural. They provide a template, or blueprint, a springboard for behavior. In a way, they are holograms of behavior in the way the ear, hand, foot, or tooth can be a hologram of the body as a whole.

Ecstatic Problem Solving

All our problems emanate from fear. Either our own or an Other’s.

Do not fear these states.

Do not fear life.

Fear is denial.

So don’t close your eyes in fear; look around and find new information.

The same stimulus will yield new information when examined in the various states of consciousness/being.

Because we perceive the world differently in each state of consciousness/being, like views of the sun filtered through various electromagnetic spectra:

  1. The animal state of fear,
  2. the neutral no-fear state of consciousness, and
  3. the interpersonal/transpersonal/archetypal states each offer a particular and unique perspective on the reality of the situation.

Observing the same thing or doing the same activity in each of these three states (animal, human, memetic/quantum) will yield new information about the thing or activity in question, and a more complete understanding of your experience will develop.

Fear, or emotional dissonance, is merely a set of cues alerting the intellect/imagination that it’s time to find more information (wind the spring and fill the well).

If we feel fear, our life-affirming task is to find more information. The narratives we use to structure our lives need updating.

That is all.

 

Life in Resonance: Living for the Benefit of Self/Other

You can do good in the world and be creative by participating in energetic actions that are positively charged thereby increasing the awareness of all things.

This pulls energy through space, phase shifting it, translating it into different frequencies, different forms.

The experience of existence is the sensation of going through a gentle wringer. The feel of cellophane pulling from the roll.

You reduce the Ineffable into a microcosmic fractal and fit it to your point of view. This is a scoping of awareness. You expand awareness of reality itself in this way.

As human entities we simultaneously evolve the universe in the ever-effervescing now, create the future,  and determine the past.

You might agree that you do not. You might agree that history is a bunch of facts in history books or religious texts.

But really you control history. You control how you feel about the past, present, and future.

Feelings and Time are fractals of being, of existing.

Think in eons, in epochs, in ages. With the proper planning and point of view, a life-affirming Happening could be orchestrated that would set off a chain of events that would positively and profoundly impact future generations.

Humans are self-aware entities that share the experience being a part of consciousness and at the same time containing the whole of it.

We are the energetic formations that function as hands that shape the clay of reality, the whole of physical reality, the positive aspect paired with the negative.

We are energetic mushrooms sprouting from the mycelium of the Word.

We are the hands of a sculptor, sculpting a monument to Existence.

Energetic Ants.

And there are aspects of existence we have yet to experience within our biological constraints.

Or maybe there is no sculptor and the structure generates itself infinitely due to probability.

Take your pick.

Memetic Energy Is Ecstatic Art

Memetic energies are most easily perceived in their larger, more pure, forms. These are the big pairs of opposites such as love/hate, wellbeing/trauma, life/death, existence/non-existence.

The purpose of art and individual human expression is to translate these powerful and subtle energies into memetic artifacts that others can perceive. This is how Ineffable and personal truths are communicated.

If we want to perceive the Ineffable and experience Truth, we can produce or consume life-affirming art.

The human organism perceives the big pairs of opposites and the Ineffable via music, symbology, and metaphor. These are nodes where information and experience overlap and the individual and collective make sense of the chaos of their existence.
